“Your gateway to our medieval past...”
Portcullis History can be your gateway to our medieval past. Set up by Dr John Hunt and Mrs Karen Kemp, we offer a small but varied programme of short courses and day schools to our participants at selected centres around Warwickshire, Staffordshire and the West Midlands.
Our programme is under continuous development in consultation with those who attend our courses and we are happy to respond to requests for particular courses or locations where possible. This website provides information on our past, current and future offer and tells you how you can sign up for a course, join or leave our mailing list, and make contact with us.
Most of our courses are offered as half-day or full-day sessions with lunch and refreshments.
As the public health crisis around the coronavirus outbreak in the UK continues to deepen, and both voluntary and statutory restrictions are tightened, it has become increasingly evident that this threat and its aftermath will be shaping much of our lives for the next few months. In light of this, and in order to ensure clarity for all concerned, we have decided to cancel our remaining programme of Portcullis Study Days until the autumn, by which time we will all be hoping some degree of normality might have returned. Therefore, our recently advertised Study Day, 'Buildings, monuments and mentalité', to be offered in Nuneaton on June 26th, has been cancelled.
However, given that this particular day included the rare opportunity of visiting St Mary's Abbey and examining the building as a part of the day, we will be seeking to offer this day again as a part of our forthcoming 2020-21 programme. Meanwhile, those of you who have already enrolled for the day and have paid a fee will be contacted in the coming days by Karen to agree the return or destruction of your cheques.
We naturally regret having to take this course of action, but it seems the most responsible and prudent way forward in the current situation. Please do take especial care of yourselves and keep safe! We look forward to welcoming you back to our study days (and fine lunches!) later in the year, details of which will appear on our website and be advertised in the usual way.
With our best wishes,
John and Karen.
